From the top it's a beautiful picture. The very photogenic, star-shaped and best preserved fortified town in Europe - Naarden - stands with beautiful aerial photographs in many a reference book and study book. Centrally located in the Netherlands it is an ideal destination for history lovers. Ramparts, bastions, canals and cannons appeal to the imagination. And whoever walks through the fortress over the knobbly stones of the narrow streets or chooses the outer embankments and follows the 'Waterliniepad', breathes the atmosphere of bygone days in which Naarden played a leading role in the defences of the Netherlands.
