In the Shade of the Palm
The Filmfestival of Cannes is a world famous event. During the month of May, the film industry gathers at the French Riviera, the city of Cannes. A large number of international stars attend this legendary spectacle hoping to win Le Palme d’Or.
Most of the photographers prefer to capture the exuberant parade on the red carpet. But some, like the Belgian photographer Stefan Vanfleteren, choose to make portraits of the movie makers and actors in the shade of the palm.
During the last three editions of the Filmfestival, Vanfleteren made photographs for the renowned French daily Le Monde. His stylized black-and-white portraits of famous figures from the film industry form a striking contrast with the glamour and glitter of the Filmfestival.
Conditions of the photo sessions in the hotels at the Croisette are far from ideal. Minimum of time, bad light, stressed press agents, appointments running out, impatient colleagues all belong to the hectic of the festival.
The current exposition consists of a series of portraits of both iconic people from the film industry as well as upcoming young talent – far away from the blingbling and flashlights of the red carpet.
