Bas Losekoot – Familiar Strangers
Location: Bastion Oranje / Building G / Area 7
The third millennium marks the beginning of the biggest wave of urbanization in human history. In 2050 is expected that 75% of the world’s population will live in towns and cities. In this project Bas Losekoot investigates the consequences of overpopulation in the busiest cities in the world: New York, Sao Paulo, Seoul, Mumbai, Hong Kong, London, Istanbul, Lagos and Mexico City. In Naarden work that Bas created in 2016 in Lagos is on display.
Lagos is one of the largest cities in the world, but at the same time it is not very well known. For a long time it was the fastest growing city on the African continent. By 2050 it could be the third largest city in the world. The concept of the “foreigner” seems to have been reinvented in Lagos, said Bas: “I would describe the people on the street as Familiar Strangers, people who do not know but we recognize.”
